Chartfield Guesthouse evokes the spirit of a time when everything was done with a little more style and with a lot more attention to detail. It's a haven created to whisk you away from the cares of the world the moment you step inside this grand old house, which has been standing for over 120 years overlooking the picturesque Kalk Bay harbour.

This family owned guesthouse is committed to minimizing its waste footprint and have set measures in place to recycle paper and glass, which supports a local recycling company, in turn contributing to job creation. In order to reduce plastics, they have switched from a bottled water system to a filtered water fountain and provide glass bottles in the rooms that can be re-filled free of charge at the bar. They now also have a heat pump (instead of a geyser) to minimize energy consumption. In addition, by enlisting the cooperation of their guests, they ensure that all electrical appliances are turned off and not left on standby when not in use and have converted to energy efficient light bulbs.

Chartfield Guesthouse employs previously disadvantaged persons and provides training for them to become qualified in every aspect. Chartfield has increased its impact in the local community by buying all of its fresh produce locally as well as making use of suppliers in the immediate area. They also refer their guests to the local shops, restaurants and spas in order to generate as much buying power for the area as possible.

In the words of Florian Blochliger, Owner of Chartfield Guesthouse “It is absolutely wonderful to be associated with Fair Trade in Tourism and the concepts that they encourage. We are honored to say that we know we are on the right path and happy to let our guests know that we are doing our best to offer the most responsible and ethical experience possible”
