Klippe Rivier Country House is a magnificent Cape Dutch Homestead circa 1820, on the outskirts of Swellendam, a picturesque and historic town only two hours from Cape Town and the Garden Route. It stands in a tranquil setting, surrounded by orchards and farmlands.
The 'waenhuis' (wagon house) and stables have been converted into six spacious, individually styled bedrooms with separate bathrooms. Upstairs loft bedrooms have spacious terraces while downstairs bedrooms have fireplaces and walled herb gardens. A secluded thatched cottage, ideal for couples and honeymooners, has a fireplace and a separate bathroom.
After taking a stroll to the gum trees at the top of the farm, guests can cool off in the salt-water swimming pool. Activities such as canoeing, golfing, and horse riding through the local forests can be arranged independently.
FAIR TRADE IN TOURISM The majority of Klippe Rivier staff members are previously disadvantaged individuals from rural backgrounds, who have since received training and gained secure employment. They have gained confidence and are earning good wages.
One philosophy of Klippe Rivier’s is to support small enterprises and buy local whenever possible. Guests are encouraged to visit local art and craft businesses.
Klippe Rivier Country House has installed a wastewater management system and utilises low-volume toilet systems. Waste separation and alien vegetation removal are practiced on its grounds. The establishment has also invested considerably in the preservation of the historic homestead and surrounding buildings. |
