Having acquired the farm in 2000 – neglected for 24 years – the initial intention of the new owners was to clean and restore the premises – but fate had other ideas!
The Soekershof concept came about within a week of happy discoveries and fascinating local folklore…

First of all Soekershof is the ‘breeding place’ of the South African cactus trade. The farm is the ‘ancestor’ of all cactus nurseries in South Africa including the nursery next door. In one of the succulent gardens of Soekershof visitors can admire the oldest cactus of South Africa (Anno 1910) opposite the graves of cactus pioneer Marthinus Malherbe and his wife Molly Darling.

Soekershof – uncover the mystery of our mazes and gardens, in the company of people who want to provide you with an enjoyable and inspirational experience. You can also enjoy an interactive exploration of Soekershof’s highly acclaimed outdoor succulent collection: we have more than 2400 different registered succulent plants that originate from several continents. Discover hidden ‘baby bumps’, ‘horse teeth’ and other gems. Try something new and come for a flower tasting, and let the wonders of nature stimulate all your senses. ‘Our Little Nursery’ and ‘The Shop’ offer naturally-grown succulent plants and locally-made garden accessories for your own garden. Soekershof, as it is today, draws on the wealth of local history and story-telling folklore. In Soekershof – whose name means Seekers Court – you can explore the original succulent garden of Marthinus Malherbe, who is buried there, and see the oldest cactus in South Africa, which dates from 1910. Your Maze Quest adventure starts with a Stone Age Cinema screening. Then, it’s off to the maze, where you will discover a surprise around every corner, if you only dare to open your heart and mind. Uncovering the mysteries of the German and the Dutchman will leave a smile on your face and a souvenir in your pocket.
