FTTSA Certification

The Trademark is based on six FTTSA principles, used to develop criteria that make it possible to objectively and practically measure Fair Trade in Tourism.

It is an independent and respected symbol of fair and responsible business practice in the tourism industry, and is rigorously monitored by FTTSA staff to maintain high standards and maximise its effectiveness as a marketing tool for all Trademark users.

The Application Process

Tourism establishments first undergo a self-assessment process, followed by an independent, on-site evaluation. After an expert panel review, successful candidates are awarded the Trademark.

The Trademark Panel

The Trademark Panel is a three-member panel, chaired by the FTTSA National Coordinator that considers all Trademark Applicants.

The panel members are: Jennifer Seif (FTTSA Executive Director), Anthea Stephens (South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) , and Lee-Anne Bac (Grant Thornton Strategic Solutions).

FTTSA Assessors
Dr Anna Spenceley works across southern Africa on sustainable tourism issues, particularly in relation to biodiversity conservation, protected areas, sustainable livelihoods, fair trade, corporate social responsibility and poverty alleviation. She obtained her doctorate from the University of Greenwich for the development of a sustainable nature-based tourism assessment toolkit.

Michel Girardin manages two tourism enterprises in the Limpopo Province. He has also worked as a guide and guide trainer, manager, and marketer in the tourism industry. He has held the position of General Manager of Sun Game Lodges, and Director of a premiere private game lodge, and was a member of the founding committee of the Field Guide Association of Southern Africa. He has also worked extensively on an FTTSA pilot project with the Ribolla Tourism Association in the Limpopo Province.

Lisa Scriven is a technical advisor on responsible tourism development. She has over 10 years of experience in the fields of tourism and conservation in African, European and North American contexts where she has worked in a variety of capacities within the public, private, academic and NGO sectors. Lisa’s primary areas of expertise are tourism SMME and ecotourism development, and establishing partnerships involving the private sector, particularly in conservation and tourism initiatives.
